So, Mad Mats heads to the UK for his first DJ show in Bristol. A guy called Matt collects him from Heathrow airport in London for the trip southwest. Little does he know that he's gone and got in the car with Zumen. Warning to label bosses - beware budding producers, big car stereos, and two hour journeys, coz you never know what you gonna end up with. Zumen ended up with a single deal, the first steps to the beast of a debut 12", you've got in your grubby little mitts.
Zumen has been around in one form or another for some time. The word zumen is Japanese for "a plan" or "Blueprint", which was his early DJ name. Starting DJ'ing back in 1988, he and Swansea promoter and DJ, Phil Wakley, with the Spacebase club night running from 94-96, were the first to introduce Swansea to the sounds of funk, hip hop, soul and the burgeoning movements of acid jazz, along the way promoting DJ's like Mark Rae, Mr Scruff, 4 Hero, Reprazent, Cut Chemist and Richard Dorfmeister.
Swiftly moving through to the drum and bass sound that was reverberating around the UK, Zumen and Phil, along with now Futureboogie MC, Ekimov, started up Science in 1996, and continued to introduce the freshest sounds to Swansea with Grooverider, Fabio, Roni Size, Krust and DJ Hype.
After a couple of years a move to London ensued, bringing a hiatus in the music, apart from the obvious listening, as earning pounds became the order of the day. A relative latecomer to production, 2002 saw Zumen get his first PC, and start cracking out early beats as Major Rotation, bringing encouraging words from those who heard them off CDR, like Mr Scruff, Domu, Seiji and Jazzanova. Exposure to the early broken sounds of the West London Goya axis, and not to mention far too much checkin of West London pirate radio stations on the way home from work, brings us to the Zumen of now, with a simple plan of making good music. And good music is exactly what we have here with the grimy, technoid ragga bruk of such releases as "Rolexx" and "Sambatech" so far put out on Raw Fusion Recordings. | |
